Revel and the Lava Crusher · a novel by Josh Melzer
In Gearford, a city built entirely around racing, twelve-year-old Revel digs up a legendary monster truck and gets pulled into a hidden circuit beneath the streets. Down there, a legend called the Skeleton King turns out to be real, and the whole city is in his sights.
The Book
Gearford is obsessed with racing, and I thought I had it figured out. Train hard. Go fast. Win big. That was the plan.
Then I found Lava Crusher, a monster truck buried in a canyon, and everything changed. There is a hidden circuit beneath the city, packed with twisting tracks and dangers that do not follow any rules. At the center of it is the Skeleton King, a legend everyone said was not real. He is. And he is not here for a trophy.
Good thing I am not facing him alone. I have my twin sister and a crew of chaos loving weirdos at my side. Winning used to be my dream. Now it might be the only way to save Gearford.

Welcome to
A city built entirely around monster trucks, where the racing never really stops. The most important rule is the one nobody talks about. Do not dig too deep.
Gearford's biggest race and the dream of every kid in the city. Revel has trained his whole life to make the grid. Winning is about to mean a lot more than a trophy.
Beyond the usual trails, buried deep in the rock, Revel finds a monster truck that should not exist. Nothing is simple after he turns the key.
A secret circuit hidden beneath the streets. Twisting tracks, ghostly racers, and dangers that do not follow any rules anyone knows.
Driverless trucks that haunt the tunnels, draining the city's power and hunting anyone brave or foolish enough to race below.
An ancient power source buried under the city. Whoever controls it controls Gearford. Something down there already wants it.
A legend Gearford kids grow up half believing. It turns out the legend is real, and he is not here for a trophy.

About the author
Revel and the Lava Crusher began the way the best bedtime stories do, on demand. Josh Melzer's son Revel wanted a story about himself, a monster truck, and a fireball, and from there he kept adding to the cast, a fearless cannonball named Boom, a gadget-obsessed squirrel named Nutty. Halloween turned a pack of skeletons into a villain called the Skeleton King. The Floor is Lava, his favorite game, gave the truck its name. Josh started writing the stories down so he would not have to reinvent them every night. They kept growing.
He wrote them fast and cinematic on purpose, so a young kid could picture every race as it happened. The result is a middle grade fantasy adventure that works read aloud together, or handed to a slightly older kid to tear through alone.
Josh was born in New Jersey and spent years in New York working in marketing, building brands and telling their stories, before moving to Florida. He still builds Lego sets, which makes sense for someone who cannot stop building worlds. He lives in Boca Raton with his husband and a French bulldog.
Revel and his twin sister Rylie, now five, are the book's heroes and its namesakes, and they are still too young to read it. For now, Revel just calls it his monster truck book.
The world of Gearford kept expanding long after the kids fell asleep.
